Substance use and mental illness can be uncomfortable topics to discuss. That’s why National Recovery Month is a great way to get the conversation going. Millions of people across the nation have turned their lives around with treatment, and that’s not something to hide.
National Recovery Month, held every September, celebrates the accomplishments of those in recovery, and honors service providers who help make treatment possible.
For the past 27 years, recoverees have been encouraged to share their success stories and achievements with others, wherever they can, to inspire those who may be seeking help. Success stories increase awareness that treatment is effective and recovery is achievable.
Each year, a different Recovery Month theme is developed. For 2017, the theme “Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities” focuses on the importance of family and community support during recovery. Those who have gotten their lives back through recovery can spread the message that treatment really does work.
